What is a successful freelance writer? Are you successful if you make a certain amount of money each week? Are you successful if you make any money each week? The truth is that there are no clear-cut signs that you can see in a successful freelance writer. However, among groups of writers, there are a few different characteristics that are commonly agreed on as signs of a successful writer. Here are some of those characteristics -
Not Having to Look for Jobs
If you have a steady work flow, or if clients are coming to you for work, this is a great sign that you are a successful freelance writer. Getting above the query letters, the bidding sites, and the hunt for jobs is wonderful. As you become more popular with clients and you begin to build a name for yourself, you won’t have to look for jobs as much and sometimes not even at all. You will have a steady workload that allows you to pick and choose. If this isn’t successful or at least close, I don’t know what is.
Making a Decent Amount of Money
If you are making enough money to live on, you are a successful freelance writer. Although you may not have enough money for all the things you would like to purchase or the kind of lifestyle you wish you had, you’re still successful. After all, there are tons of educated adults who work at “9-to-5″ jobs and aren’t satisfied with the amount of money they are making or the lifestyle they lead, either. If you are living on what you make from freelance writing, it’s more than just a great start. It’s a foundation for a huge career and lots of success!
Working for Larger Companies
If you are working for companies that are immediately recognizable or at least familiar to most people, this is another sign of a successful freelance writer. Even if you’re not making all you want to be making, a name that is recognizable looks amazing on a résumé and can really open up a lot of opportunities for a writer. This is another great sign that you are successful and are on your way to something even bigger.
Success is defined differently by different people. One freelance writer may not believe that he’s successful if he’s not making $100,000 a year while another may feel that he or she is successful if they do not have to bid on jobs anywhere. The truth is that you are successful if you truly feel you are successful. The signs of a successful writer above are great ways to measure your success and they are also great goals to work on achieving. Good luck on your freelance writing career!
